We live in a fitness conscious world. Today we want to enjoy life with good health. We can follow some simple tips to cut calories from our diet. By paying a bit of attention to our diet, we can turn away the menace called weight gain. It is always better not to modify your diet completely and continue with what you are eating earlier. This way your body don’t feel deprived of certain food. You just have to reduce the quantity and frequency of your favorite food.

Instead of Juice opt for Fresh Fruits: Increase the intake of fresh fruits in your diet. When you are having sweet cravings, eat fruits. Packaged fruits juices contain lots of calories. So chuck them away from your dining table and fridge. Fruits contains less calories and more fibers.

Use smaller Plates: Chose smaller sized plates. They reduce your calories intake without you being aware of it. So less agonizing and sacrificial feeling for you to grapple with. You can’t fill your plates with large amount of food and hence consume less.

Drink Water: Try to drink lots of water instead of cold drinks or soda. Water keep your system clean and hydrated. It also flush out toxins from your body. It goes without saying that water has no calories like soda or cold drinks. If you can get coconut water drink that too as it is an excellent thirst quencher.

Take Care of Your Protein Intake: Take care of your protein intake. Your body needs it for repairs. Protein also helps in keeping body fat low. But don’t take too much of protein because it will not help in fighting fat after a certain level.

Reduce the Amount of cooking oil and fat: Cook your food using less oil. Try out some tasty recipes that need roasting or stir fry as cooking method.Try using olive oil or flaxseed oil. At the same time use less butter and cheese on your toast and sandwiches. Consume less red meat and increase the intake of fish and chicken in your diet. But go for roasted or grilled chicken and fish.

Reduce Portions: You don’t have to give up your favorite food. If you like munching on chips and cookies. Go ahead and have them. But take a smaller packet and reduce the frequency. This way you won’t feel deprived of your favorite food and you will save yourself from the undesirable side effects.

Increase Your Fiber Intake: When you are choosing your diet carefully try incorporating fibers in your food. Fibers will help in digesting your food. They also give you a sense of fullness. You feel satiated after having lunch or dinner. This way you tend to eat less too.

Eat Home Cooked Food: Don’t fall for the convenience of canned food or restaurant food. They want repeat customers. And you too throw caution to the wind while eating out. But its a different story if you are cooking at home. Then a bit of thought process goes on about the type and amount of food. No one likes to cook more than needed.

Pay Attention While Eating Out: When you are out to enjoy food in a restaurant just be a bit cautious. Go for intelligent combinations. Balance one high calorie dish with a salad or soup too. While enjoying pizza or burger, order a side dish of fruits and salad too. Go for healthy toppings on your pizza.

Go For Whole Grain: If you enjoy eating pasts and noodles choose whole grain pasta or bread. This will give you more nutrition and less calories. They are also rich in fibers.

Get Rid of Starchy Food: You can’t avoid starchy food from your diet. Because most of our food consists of starch be it pasta, bread, potato, cereals and rice. But eat the quantity that is required not more than that. It should not be more than one third of our diet. Don’t add fatty options with starch foods.

Reduce Dessert Size: Most of us possess a sweet tooth. We like having desserts. Why should one deprive of so called good things in life. But at the same time pay attention to portion size and frequency. This way you won’t suffer from withdrawal symptoms. Sometimes avoid cream or chocolate toppings from your dessert. Sometimes be imaginative and come out with your own special healthy toppings.

People who are trying to lose weight often go on guilt trip when they falter or eat something extra. Often the diet plans are successful for a while but later on most of the lost weight is regained. We often blame themselves that we don’t have the enough resolve to stick to the diet plan. Sticking to your diet requires more than will power and dedication. It is something more complex.

If you want your diet regimen to be successful, keep your diet plan simple. Don’t follow a complex diet program. Some finer aspect of the diet plan can make you give up your lose weight resolve. This is not some wistful thinking but researchers of from Indiana University and the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin have find this out through a study. According to them much more subtle aspect of the diets themselves can also have a big influence on the pounds shed. If you are following a complex diet plan, chances are that you will chuck it sooner or later.

Peter Todd, professor in IU’s Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences, says, "For people on a more complex diet that involves keeping track of quantities and items eaten, their subjective impression of the difficulty of the diet can lead them to give up on it."

Cognitive scientists from Indiana University and the Max Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin compared the dieting behavior of women. These women were given two radically different diet plans to follow and it was more than obvious that the more complicated people thought their diet plan was, the sooner they were likely to drop it.

Jutta Mata, now a professor of psychology at Stanford University, expresses her opinion, "Even if you believe you can succeed, thinking that the diet is cognitively complex can undermine your efforts."

Now the crux of the matter is, Dieting is not all in one’s head. Forces of external environment play their roles too. The physical environment has to be set up properly. You have to put calorie laden snacks out of site. But now scientists say that you have to take cognitive environment into account too. This cognitive environment must also be appropriately constructed, by choosing diet rules that that one finds easy to remember and follow.

For people interested in following a diet plan, Mata suggests they take a look at several diet plans with an eye toward how many rules the plans have and how many things need to be how many things need to be kept in mind.

Mata says, "If they decide to go with a more complex diet, which could be more attractive for instance if it allows more flexibility, they should evaluate how difficult they find doing the calculations and monitoring their consumption. If they find it very difficult, the likelihood that they will prematurely give up the diet is higher and they should try to find a different plan."

While losing weight initially isn’t that difficult but keeping it off remains a challenge to dieters. It generally is believed that the longer people can adhere to their diet plan, the more successful they will be long-term with their weight loss maintenance.

Have you ever pondered upon if weight loss can be unhealthy as well? Yes it is true that weight loss can be extremely unhealthy at times. Here we would try to define an unhealthy weight loss and see how we can enforce a healthy weight loss.

A weight loss is termed as unhealthy when it can lead to various heath issues, usually because of method adopted for such weight loss. It is obvious that most of the diet programs that cut out certain foods from our daily intake tend to induce unhealthy weight loss. Cutting out certain items results in a quick drop in the energy levels and other bodily processes. However, as soon as these items are included back in the diet, the weight lost comes back very fast. On gaining the weight back people very often start on a different diet plan that cuts out some other food items and the process goes on like this.

We are all aware that our body tunes to a specific diet that we take and the constant changes in the diet plan confuses our bodies. Especially the diet plans that restrict intake of food items can have the reverse effect on our weight. Our body may feel starved and thus induce us to have more calories than usual resulting in a weight gain. The quick weight fluctuations can cause many other health problems and thus it is considered to be an unhealthy way of losing weight.

Healthy weight loss on the other hand is usually an outcome of including enough physical exercise, a healthy diet plan and a sound sleep pattern in our daily routine. Yes, a sound sleep is as essential as regular exercise and a strict diet for you to healthily lose weight. Because of a sound sleep you tend to feel fresh instead of feeling tired and cut down on restoring to junk food for activeness and to keep your sugar level up.

The lifestyle change is of prime importance to healthy weight loss instead of mere changes in the diet plans. The fact is that many a times you will not need to cut anything out of your diet and still can induce weight loss that is healthy. You will be surprised to find some of the best plans that allow you to eat anything you want to once in a while just to keep you motivated enough.

Setting realistic weight loss goals again helps you to adopt methods that are healthy. You need to be patient with the downtrend of your body weight rather than desiring it to happen in a flash.

Succinctly put, to achieve healthy weight loss you need to be focused on the realistic goals, get enough sleep and exercise regularly. Some may find it difficult but it is worth the pains in the end.

A recent review of studies from the University of Cincinnati, which appeared in the July-August issue of the American Journal of Health Promotion revealed that a little push from the workplace can help workers lose weight.

In the words of Michael Benedict, MD and researcher in the department of internal medicine, “Worksite-based programs do tend to result in weight loss for the people that participate in them”, who co-authored this new study.

The basis of this conclusion is the 11 studies that were published since 1994.

Out of these 11 publications, most of the programs emphasized on educating and counseling on diet as well as physical activity, which lasted anywhere between 2 and 18 months.

The intervention intensity of these studies were classified as low, moderate, and high intensity where about 46 % had low-intensity interventions, about 18 % were moderate intensity and the remaining 36% had high-intensity intervention.

Benedict opines that intervention assumes a fair level of significance as far weight loss is concerned. He further stated that programs that had face-to-face contact with the workers were more effective as compared to other programs that were carried out.

When data was compared, participants involved in higher-intensity programs lost an average of 2.2 pounds to 14 pounds. Participants other than the higher-intensity programs lost about 1.5 pounds to a gain of 1.1 pounds.

It’s interesting to observe what Benedict has to say here: “Most employed adults in the U.S. spend nearly half of their waking hours at their place of employment," and “Worksite based programs have great potential to positively impact our current obesity epidemic.”

Benedicts also cautions saying “Participants in these programs may lose weight, but it is unclear what happens after the fact, as weight maintenance has not been studied.”

Since unavailability of sufficient data on the cost involved in organizing such programs, employers are keen on considering this as an option that can yield huge return on investment.

Finally Benedict concludes, “These programs have the potential to have a tremendous public health impact. However, more high quality research is needed."

If you are staying in a rural area and do find it inconvenient and expensive for you to attend face to face weight loss counseling, you have a reason to smile now. According to one of the studies phone counseling for weight loss can offer similar results as face-to-face counseling. What is interesting is that this is much cheaper and less time consuming than the cost and time involved in a face-to-face counseling.

Professor Michael G. Perri of College of Public Health and Health Professions, from The University of Florida led the researchers in this study of 234 obese women between 50 and 75 years of age from rural areas. These women were subjected to weight loss program at the end of which on an average they lost 22 pounds. For weight control or maintenance, the women were divided in three separate groups. While the women from two groups received either face-to-face or telephonic counseling, the women in the third group were only given printed material on how to maintain body weight. They were asked to adopt various weight control measures and keep a record of what they ate on at least three days in a week including a weekend. These records showed a strong likelihood of women of the counseling groups adhering to the advisory of weight control program.

The researchers found at the end of the study period of one year the women from the groups that received face-to-face or telephonic counseling gained 2.5 pounds on an average. On the other hand the women in the other group gained 8 pounds on an average.

"We found that the participants who received extended care were able to maintain their weight loss at higher levels than those participants who only received printed health education materials as a follow-up," Professor Michael G. Perri said and added "The success of telephone counseling gives us a cost-effective alternative to face-to-face visits that is more convenient for rural residents who may need to travel long distances for care."

The other interesting observation in the study was the cost of counseling. Telephone counseling was less expensive than the face-to-face counseling and offered valuable benefits to the rural communities.

In the hope of losing weight obese people try all possibilities including crash diets, miracle pills, liposuction, and other quick-fix procedures. But the fact of the matter is that people who are overweight do not take in sufficient oxygen. These days, people use bottled oxygen to lose weight. But that unfortunately is not a permanent solution as bottled oxygen aid largely in saving lives but when it comes to losing weight, it doesn’t provide optimal benefit.

Eating habits, no matter how systematic or restricted they are, cannot help in reducing weight unless the toxins in the body are removed and the calorie consumption is adequately burnt. Right eating habits, minimum physical activity, and proper breathing are vital to keep the body weight under control. Inadequate oxygen and low metabolism tends to add pounds to the body with almost anything that is consumed.

Generally speaking, our body mechanism is such that 70% of the wastage is discharged as carbon dioxide through breathing. Only a small percentage is expected to discharge toxins through sweat, defecation, and urination. The problem is obese people have restricted breathing because of which neither their toxins are released nor their calories burnt. As a result, their kidneys and liver is made to work extra. These toxins have the potential to clog up your breathing and cause other organs to malfunction by diverting the oxygen supply.

Lack of adequate physical activity weakens our breathing. However, depending on the body type and the intensity of the physical exertion, the breathing you do can have either a positive or a negative effect. It is better to first learn the breathing technique before taking up a physical exercise, rather than doing the exercise first and in the process breathing too.

Knowing the right breathing technique is crucial to release toxins and increase metabolism.

Start paying attention to your breathing pattern and if you find them improper, learn the right breathing and pave way for a healthy and obese free life!
