According to the study, if someone consumes one can of soda each day, the risk of his/her gaining weight is 41% more as compared to one taking regular soda. This may be because of the diet drinks fooling the body to think it to be getting the requisite calories when actually it is not. This results in your body asking for more calories and you end up eating more than your regular meals. The similar is the effect of caffeine, an essential in the artificial sweeteners. It leaves you dehydrated and usually the thirst is confused with hunger with you eating up more.

Aspartame, one of the artificial sweeteners, helps in building up formaldehyde agents and may end up becoming toxic. It is known to slowly cause long-term damage to your body. Many published reports blame diet drinks that include artificial sweeteners, chemicals, preservatives, and caffeine for major illnesses.

Carbonation causes a pH imbalance in the body hence making it acidic. To lose weight, the body needs to be slightly alkaline and not acidic. The weight loss is halted when body’s natural detoxification gets a hit because of it being too much acidic.

Essentially, diet drinks are not an alternative at all in your quest for weight loss. They may actually damage your body in more than one way apart from resulting in a weight gain for you. Making a shift towards healthy and organic and whole foods; getting into a habit of having smaller meals at regular intervals; and exercising to shed those excess calories are few of the proven ways to go about it.
