How Does Body Fat Get Converted In Energy?
Apr 12, 2009 2 Comments »
Our body needs energy on a constant basis and as a primary resource it uses the glycogen reserves. If the energy supplied by the glycogen is insufficient for the body then a catabolic process known as lipolysis, starts working and converts the fat stored in the adipose cells into the energy. Lipolysis gets its name from the enzyme known as hormone sensitive lipase (HSL). HSL works on triglycerides within adipose cells to break them into fatty acids and glycerol. These are then carried to the liver for further processing after which are transported to the tissues for usage as energy.
What is Adipose Tissue?
Adipose tissue is made of adipose cells that carry the excess fat and can process it to convert it into energy when required. Carbohydrates and proteins when taken in excess add to the fat deposits in the adipose tissue, apart from dietary fats that we eat. These tissues are mainly located just under the skin in our body though some adipose tissues are part of organs like heart and some other muscles. It is impossible for humans to decide which adipose cells will act as storage for excess fat first as our genes play all important part in the storage process. Similarly it is not possible for us to decide which adipose tissue would provide energy first in case of need. Thus we can not control utilization of fat stores from a specific body area.
What makes us Fat or obese?
The main reason for the body fats to get stored is the size of the servings which in on the rise and thus the intake of calories is on the up when compared to the daily body requirements. The lack of exercises or physical activities that help us burn calories is another reason why our meals always carry excess energy than required.
Last two and half decades have seen considerable instances of obesity throughout the world which is now regarded as a disease of excess body fats. Researchers across the globe are trying to find out why the occurrence of obesity has increased in the present times. However no apparent reasons are found apart from the usual reasons like excess calorie intake, lack of physical activities and exercises, metabolic malfunctions and genetic factors. Scientists also opine that since genetic factors take hundreds and millions of years to affect these can not be the major influencers of obesity. There is however evidence of a continued dropdown in the human body’s metabolic capabilities which may be the underlying factor for increased obesity instances.
