Most of us gain weight by binging on our favorite food. If we can keep this tendency in check we can keep our weight in control too. Whenever we are undergoing through some crisis we reach out for our favorite food to comfort us. Some of us feel such type of craving once in a while but others are not so fortunate. Some of us experience food cravings on daily or weekly basis. This tendency to eat addicted food may or may not comfort us but it certainly adds extra pounds to our body which is so undesirable. Why is it necessary to control food cravings? Because comfort foods are mainly packed with lots of fat, salt or sugar. They ultimately add layers of fat to your body. The question is how to control your favorite food cravings? It is not so difficult. You can try some simple methods to keep your food cravings in check.
- Keep a notebook of what you are eating. After a week run a cursory glance over it to check if you are eating a healthy and balanced diet. Because sometimes your body crave for certain food that is lacking in your diet. If you can’t figure out on your own whether your diet is healthy and balanced then meet a dietician. Show your notebook to her. She might prescribe some multivitamins for you.
- Don’t give up your favorite food entirely. Your brain might send strong signals to your body for that food. But don’t eat your favorite food whenever you want. Have your favorite food in small portions and reduce the frequency too. This way you will not feel deprived and food cravings will not be irresistible to you. If you want a cheese cake for weeks and couldn’t get the picture of it out of your mind, give in. Have your cake in smaller size and cut calories from other foods to compensate.
- Listen to your food cravings. How? Find out why you want to eat your favorite food? Is it psychological or physical? If your food craving is arising out of stress, boredom, loneliness or sadness pick up phone not your favorite food. You need someone who can listen to you. Try to find some company or just go out and take a walk if no one is there to talk to you at the moment. Here you can be innovative and devise your own methods to fight the psychological food cravings. You can indulge in your favorite hobby, read something interesting, write down about your cravings or whatever is possible, given the time and space constraints.
- Get the Alternative. Again you can let your creative size lose in order to lose weight. If you are craving for something sweet try to indulge in a healthy alternative. You can chew on some sweet fruits. If you are craving for ice cream, try to prepare your own smoothie from your favorite fruit. If you are craving for something salty, you might prepare your salad dip more innovatively. Try to explore and you will find that possibilities are immense.
- Make your food tasty. Don’t go for strict dieting which have uninspiring food on your plate. It will make your cravings stronger and when you will be off diet the chances are you will be binging on your favorite food that will bring back all the weight which you have lost while dieting. Don’t go for a strict diet plan. It’s a myth that healthy food is tasteless. A balanced and healthy diet can be tasty too. Instead of fried chicken you can have roasted chicken with same spices. If you don’t like assortment of boiled vegetables, roast it by piercing it on a stick and sprinkle your favorite salt and toppings (in lesser amount) and enjoy it without feeling guilty. Avoid eating packaged food. Try to find a way to spend less time in kitchen but don’t go for tinned, canned and packaged food.
